Health Project - Restaurant Brochure

We went to the computer lab to begin working on our health projects.  We are creating a restaurant brochure.

The students are owners of restaurants that serve healthy meals.  Their restaurants specialize in 3 healthy meals (due November 14, 2014). All 3 meals have to be breakfast, lunch, or dinner...not one of each.

Today, in the computer lab, I got them started creating their brochures in Microsoft Publisher 2010.  I'm not very familiar with Publisher myself; however, the children picked up quickly.  Most students were able to manipulate Publisher, there was one that would rather work on it by hand, which was fine with me.

The rough drafts are due on Friday.  The final copy is due on December 5, 2014.  Pictures of the projects will be posted in the next few weeks.

Copies of the directions and layout expectations can be found at www.tinyurl.com/anfletcher under Health and at http://new.schoolnotes.com/anfletcher under Files.  A copy of the expectations were sent to parents.

This Week...

We did not have Science this week because we were preparing for the End of Quarter Benchmark Test, called MUST (Mandatory Unit System Test).

The MUST Assessment covered everything we've covered in school this year.  Most of the students were really focused and trying very hard.  That took place on Thursday.  This week, we covered Coordinate Grid and Absolute Value.

Health Projects were due this week.  Because today was a two-hour early dismissal, a number of students did not show up.  Therefore, they did not turn in their projects.  This has affected their Health Grade.  Projects can not be turned in on Wednesday, when we return, because it will be 2nd Quarter.

Fractions and Estimation

The students had to determine whether a fraction was closest to 0, ½, or 1 whole.  They first had to illustrate the fraction, then estimate based on what they drew.

Here are the artifacts we created:

For the circle, we identified ⅝.  Then identified ½.  They were then supposed to see how close ⅝ was to 0, ½, or 1 whole of the circle shaded.

We repeated with rectangles.  This was a lot easier than trying to divide up circles.

Using counters was very difficult of the students.  Seeing as though, this was the first time doing this, we will review some more.

First Day of School for Teachers and Staff

Well, today was my first day back to work since June 13th.  I must have been really anxious last night, because I could not sleep.  I tossed and turned all night long thinking about all of the work I needed to do.

We had meetings the first half of the day.  We reviewed last year's data, welcomed new staff members, and caught up with the returning staff.

For the 2nd half of the day, we were able to work in our classrooms.  I got just about my entire classroom finished and ready for the students.

Needless to say, I came home and went right to sleep.  Whew!  What a day!  I finished some Health Lesson Plans for the first unit and posted the homework for August 29th.  You can check the homework at http://new.schoolnotes.com/anfletcher.  Feel free to subscribe to receive updates.

Tomorrow, I'll be in meetings for most of the day with only about 2 hours to work on my room.
